I'm not sure if this is the right board to chat about this but here goes....
Has anyone else read Travis' latest Ground Truth article? What do you think about the popular "Be safe" comment? I think it has different meanings depending upon which culture you are talking about. I think Management (those who are not in the field) might feel it means what Travis says: don't get hurt or do anything stupid. But I when I read his article and reflected upon when I have said it (and I say it a lot) I realized that I don't think that's what I mean when I say it to the people I work with or friends who are firefighters. I think I mean a bunch of other messages balled up into a neat little obscure package of "Be safe". I think I mean: Keep your head on a swivel, Communicate with others despite personal differences or obstacles, I care about you and want you to come home to your loved ones, Have fun out there and I trust you will make the best decisions you can with the information you have. But in a world where I don't want to seem like Your Mommy or overly sensitive and protective I say "Be safe".
What do you think?
