Fireline Leadership Reading Room

The Professional Reading Program is tasked with providing a program and delivery system of literature designed to foster leadership development at all levels of the fire service. It is here as an additional tool to help develop current and future leaders using reading to expand the breadth and depth of their leadership skills. We want the PRP to be a sustainable and adaptable program that is engaged by leaders of all levels to support a continued growth in leadership through reading.
Students of fire are encouraged to use this forum to discuss books their local unit is reading and/or wants to share with other members of the fire service.

IRWIN Project

The IRWIN service is a Wildland Fire Information and Technology (WFIT) affiliated investment, intended to provide an “end-to-end” fire reporting capability. IRWIN is tasked with providing data exchange capabilities between existing applications used to manage data related to wildland fire incidents. IRWIN is focused on the goals of reducing redundant data entry, identifying authoritative data sources, and improving the consistency, accuracy, and availability of operational data.
IRWIN can be thought of as a central hub that orchestrates data between the various applications. Users will continue to utilize the existing applications but some or all of the data needed to create an incident for example, will be pre-populated. Data is synchronized between participating applications to ensure the most current data is available. IRWIN conducts conflict detection and resolution on all new wildfire incidents to support a unique record for each ignition.

Life First

The intent of this page is to share first-hand accounts of the use of the “Stop, Think, Talk...then Act” practice referenced in Forest Service Life First engagements. Our hope is that sharing these stories will promote learning about ways to help eliminate unnecessary exposure and inspire and encourage others to make use of the practice.
Generally, the first-hand accounts posted here are displayed “as submitted.” However, some submittals have to be modified to ensure the anonymity of those involved in the “story,” ensure content is relevant and respectful of others, or to correct grammatical or punctuation errors. Accounts are shared without regard to the outcome of the use of the practice (i.e., whether or not it resulted in change to a proposed action) – there is the potential to learn from every story!
Submittals to this site that are something other than first-hand accounts of the use of the practice are not displayed here. However, the content of all submittals is being entered into a searchable database to inform other moves toward the intention of continuing to improve the wildland fire system to one that more reliably protects responders and the public, sustains communities and conserves the land.

Mobile Technologies in Fire and Aviation Management

Fire and Aviation management operations require mobile technology and seamless communications with other emergency-response personnel & organizations. The Wildland Mobile Technologies Working Group will provide evaluation of new mobile technologies and innovation in Fire and Aviation; coordination of other efforts in mobile technology for the user community’s awareness; and recommend solutions based on test results to the Wildland Fire Information and Technology (WFIT) Program Board. The WMTWG Group will deliver guidance and advice to the WFIT Program Board and inform FS Deputy Area Resource Information Managers (RIMs), Department of the Interior (DOI), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), U.S. Forest Service Chief Information Officers (CIOs), and other federal and non-federal administrators regarding proposed fire and aviation mobile technologies & infrastructure needs and changes.

The purpose of this community is to encourage collaboration and innovation amongst the user community and provide a conduit to share this information.
So please - share ideas, questions, and advice on using mobile technologies for FAM as well as needs, requirements and potential future projects to work on!
